Are mattresses becoming more expensive?

Speaking to a friend last night I found out that he spent 5,000 pounds on his current memory foam mattress.  To say I was shocked at the least is an understatement, this is the first ive ever heard of anyone spending so much money on a mattress.

The reason why he bought such an expensive mattress is that he was reccomended it by the salesperson in the store. Now, this is not something that I would go for myself, but apparently the salesperson was well read up in the market and had been working at the store for a number of years. This conversation made me wonder if single mattresses and mattresses in general are becoming more and more expensive?

I took a look at the prices of mattresses over the last 5 years and also inflation as a general rule. 5 years ago, single mattresses were available at an average of 45 pounds. Now single mattresses are bought at an average of 89 pounds, each. This is an incredible increase over a five year period, showing how expensive sleep has become.

Based on this increase, we anticipate single mattresses to become more of a commodity as people place more value on the quality of sleep.
